School of Law Academics Contribute to Edited Collection on the Rule of Law for Oceans

Dr Mitchell Lennan (AUCELACCPIL) and Dr Constantinos Yiallourides (Lecturer Macquarie University Law School; Honorary Lecturer, Aberdeen Law School) have contributed chapters to an edited collection published open-access by Cambridge University Press.

‘The Environmental Rule of Law for Oceans – Designing Legal Solutions’ edited by Dr Froukje Maria Platjouw (Norwegian Institute for Water Research) and Prof Alla Pozdnakova (University of Oslo) contains 25 chapters which provide future-oriented perspectives on how law can and should evolve to better protect the ocean. The edited collection is the product of a conference attended by both Mitchell and Constantinos in Oslo in November 2019. Both chapters address issues surrounding the conservation, management and sustainable use of marine living resources.

Mitchell’s chapter, titled 'Fisheries Redistribution under Climate Change
Rethinking the Law to Address the ‘Governance Gap’?' focuses on the international legal obligation to adapt conservation and management of marine living resources to the effects of climate change - particularly shifting fish stocks due to warming seas. The chapter is based on the early stages of his PhD research at Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance.

Constantinos’ chapter, titled ‘Understanding Japan’s Resumption of Commercial Whaling under International Law’ and provides an overview of Japan’s legal approach towards commercial whaling in the broader context of international environmental law and the precautionary principle
