AB2.H1.3 Oesophagus

Micrograph of Oesophagus:

    Oesophagus
  • This micrograph shows the wall of the oesophagus
  • The lumen is lined by a stratified squamous non-keratinising epithelium (similar to the type found in the oral cavity)
  • Deep to the epithelium lies the (connective tissue) lamina propria and then the muscularis mucosae (MM)
  • On the left of the micrograph a large mucus secreting gland is present
  • A duct (arrow) can be seen passing from this gland through the mucous membrane
  • In life this duct would carry the mucus into the lumen of the oesophagus

Questions:

The submucosa of the first part of the duodenum contains abundant mucus glands known as Brunner's glands, what is the function of these glands?
