Submandibular Gland:

  • The submandibular gland, on each side, is a large (palpable) gland that lies under the body of the mandible
  • The submandibular glands are mixed (serous and mucus) salivary glands although serous cells are more numerous
  • The enzymes produced by the serous cells include lysozyme; this enzyme breaks down bacteria cell walls
