PP2.H2.6 +D1 Primordial and Primary Ovarian Follicles

The Primordial and Primary Ovarian Follicles:

  • At birth, the ovary contains primordial follicles
  • These can be described as small follicles with an oocyte surrounded by a single layer of squamous follicular cells
  • Some primordial follicles begin to develop further from soon after birth
  • Follicles which show signs of an increase in size of the oocyte and are surrounded by a single layer of cuboidal or columnar follicular cells are described as primary follicles
