PP2.H1.4 Interstitial Cells of Leydig

Interstitial Cells of Leydig:

  • Interstitial cells of Leydig are found in the lobules of the testis and lying in the connective tissue between seminiferous tubules
  • They are located in small groups around the blood vessels that lie in the interstitial space and which will be carrying blood to the seminiferous tubules
  • The Interstitial cells of Leydig produce the steroid hormone testosterone
  • This acts on the seminiferous tubules to promote spermatogenesis
  • It also acts on the accessory glands of the male genital system to promote their secretions as well as having androgenic effects on other tissues
  • The Interstitial cells of Leydig contain much lipid and smooth endoplasmic reticulum as is characteristic of steroid hormone producing cells
