PP1.H2.2 The Ureter

The Ureter:

  • The kidney produces urine which is delivered into the renal pelvis at the hilus of the kidney
  • The renal pelvis is a funnel like structure which delivers the urine into the ureter for passage to the urinary bladder
  • The ureter is a muscular tube
  • It is lined by transitional epithelium
  • The ureter wall contains 2-3 layers of smooth muscle
  • Peristaltic contractions of the smooth muscle carry droplets of urine along the ureter to the bladder
