UL2.H2.4 Fibrocartilage

Fibrocartilage:

  • Fibrocartilage is not found in plates, unlike hyalin and elastic cartilage
  • It is usually found in association with dense connective tissue, particularly where the dense connective tissue is subject to excessive wear
  • For example, it can be found in tendons, particularly where a tendon rubs on bone during movement
  • Fibrocartilage gives the dense connective tissue of the tendon additional resistance to wear and tear
  • Fibrocartilage normally is found in clusters of a few chondrocytes surrounded by a small amount of cartilage matrix
  • The chondrocytes are usually in a row and lying between the bundles of collagen fibres within a tendon
