Specimen Processing

Clinically Relevant Histology:

  • Histology is widely used within the clinical situation as a support for clinical diagnosis
  • Tissues are routinely examined after surgery to ensure that the correct piece of tissue has been removed and also to determine if the tissue concerned shows signs of disease, or the extent of the disease process
  • The results of such analysis will be a valuable tool in confirming a preliminary diagnosis and also in contributing towards the nature of treatment a patient may require
  • The study of the disease process lies within the realms of the pathologist
  • There are many branches of pathology but histopathology is the branch which studies histological specimens in order to understand the disease process
  • It is fundamental to the study of histopathology that the normal histology of cells and tissues is understood
  • Without such basic knowledge how is one to determine what is normal from that which is abnormal?
  • This is true for the professional pathologist but also, for an understanding of the disease process, for the wider medical professional and the medical student
