PP2.H1.2 +D1 The Testis

The Testis:

  • The testis are the site of spermatozoa production and the production of the male sex hormone testosterone
  • The testis are surrounded by a thick connective tissue capsule which is extrathickened posteriorly to form the mediastinum testis
  • From the mediastinum testis, thin connective tissue septae divide the testis into lobules
  • Each lobule contains 3 or 4 seminiferous tubules where spermatogenesis (the production of spermatozoa occurs)
  • Within the lobules but between the seminiferous tubules are located clusters of cells known as the Interstitial cells of Leydig
  • These are the cells which produce the hormone testosterone
