What is histology?

  • Histology is the branch of anatomy which is concerned with the study of cells, and tissue organisation
  • It is sometimes referred to as microscopical anatomy, as routinely, histological examination of tissue is carried out by examining thin slices, or sections, of tissue in a microscope
  • Gross anatomy will assist in defining the gross structure and distribution of body parts but does little to assist in determining how those parts function
  • Histology lies at the interface between gross anatomy, physiology and molecular biology in contributing to how the normal body is put together physically but, also, how it functions as a whole and in its component parts
