HN1.H1.5 +D1 Oesophageal Glands

Oesophageal Glands:

  • The sublingual glands are each located deep to the mucous membrane of the floor of the mouth, to the side of the midline
  • The sublingual glands are mixed (serous and mucus) salivary glands
  • However, in the sublingual glands, the mucous cells are more numerous than the serous cells

  • In this micrograph of the wall of the oesophagus note, on the right side, the stratified squamous epithelium lining the lumen
  • In the wall there is a mucous secreting gland
  • Identify the duct that would carry the secretion from the gland onto the surface of the oesophageal epithelium
