LL1.H1.1 Connective Tissue

Connective Tissue:

  • Connective tissue, like other types of tissue consists of cells and extracellular matrix
  • The structural and functional characteristics of connective tissue are largely determined by the nature of the extracellular matrix
  • There are many types of connective tissue in the body and the extracellular matrix ranges from liquid (plasma of blood) to solid (bone matrix)
    • The types of connective tissue found in the body are:

      • Blood and bone marrow
      • Mucous (a gelatinous type of tissue found in the umbilical cord)
      • Reticular (a very delicate connective tissue )
      • Loose -dense (regular and irregular)
      • Cartilage -bone
  • The above list of connective tissues is ordered from the most fluid to the hardest extracellular matrix
  • In addition, fat ( adipose tissue) is a type of connective tissue
  • Loose and dense connective tissues are sometimes referred to as "general" connective tissues and are the types that most people think of when connective tissue is mentioned
  • The other types of connective tissue are sometimes referred to as the specialised connective tissues
