UL2.H1.5 +D1 Periosteum

Periosteum:

  • Bones have a (vascular) loose connective tissue covering around them: the periosteum
  • The periosteum has two layers within it although the division between them can not easily be distinguished
  • The outer layer of the periosteum forms a loose connective tissue capsule which merges with the connective tissue around neighbouring structures
  • The inner part of the periosteum is highly vascular and the blood vessels provide nutrients to the osteogenic cells which are also located in this layer
  • Branches of the blood vessels in the inner part of the periosteum permeate through the outer part of the bone matrix where they will connect with the blood vessels which lie at the centre of the osteons

The periosteum is absent at articulating sites of joints
What type of connective tissue covers the surface of bone at the articulation sites of synovial joints?

Periosteum Micrograph:

  • In this micrograph of a developing bone, the connective tissue sheath around the area of bone (B) is the periosteum (Po)
  • The part of the sheath which covers the region of hyalin cartilage (Ca) is known as the perichondrium (Pc)
  • Periosteum
