PP1.H1.4 +D1 +D2 +D3 The Renal Corpuscle

The Renal Corpuscle:

  • The renal corpuscle is made up of two components:
    • The Bowman's capsule - this is an expansion of the blind end of the nephron
    • The glomerulus - this is a tuft of blood capillaries
  • As the renal corpuscle develops, the glomerulus is indented into the Bowman's capsule
  • This gives rise to a visceral layer of the Bowman's capsule (attached to the outer wall of the capillaries) and a parietal layer of the Bowman's capsule
  • Between the visceral layer, and the parietal layer, of the Bowman's capsule lies Bowman's space
  • The filtrate from the blood is passed into the Bowman's space
  • This space is continuous with the lumen of the proximal convoluted tubule
