HP4b Passage Across Epithelium 2

Question:

    Examine micrographs b and e

One of the characteristics of an epithelium is that the cells, or the basal layer of cells in a stratified epithelium, sit on a basement membrane

On micrograph b identify the basal lamina of a basement membrane (note that all cells in this micrograph are epithelial cells)

Now examine micrograph e; none of the cells shown in this micrograph (e) are epithelial cells

    Micrograph B Micrograph E Micrograph E

Do any of the cells present have a basal lamina?
Although epithelia sit on a basement membrane, does the presence of a basal lamina define an epithelium?
