TH1.H1.3D1 Muscular Artery

Cardiac Muscle Cells: Continued

  • Identify the simple squamous epithelium lining the lumen of the artery
  • There are several layers of smooth muscle in the tunica media of this artery
  • These are all orientated in a circular fashion around the long axis of the artery
  • The tunica adventitia of this artery, stained red in this preparation, merges with the connective tissue around the skeletal muscle fibres
  • Muscular Artery

This micrograph shows a muscular artery supplying an area of skeletal muscle L = lumen of artery

Question:

What will happen to the diameter of the artery, and hence the flow of blood to the area of skeletal muscle, when the muscle of the tunica media contracts?
What is the function of the tunica adventitia?
