Honorary Graduates

Each year we award honorary degrees to distinguished individuals who merit special recognition for genuine achievement and distinction in a field or activity, not only to acknowledge and celebrate their success but also to provide our students with inspiration role models, prompting further determination to succeed and achieve.

In 2022 the University refreshed its process for awarding honorary degrees to reflect the ambitions of Aberdeen 2040.

Alison Cameron - Archaeologist and Specialist in North‑East Scotland Heritage

Degree: MUniv

Ali Cameron is a professional archaeologist who has made an exceptional and lasting contribution to archaeology in North‑East Scotland.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, she has played a central role in uncovering, interpreting, and preserving the region’s rich archaeological heritage. After graduating in 1984 with a degree in Archaeological Sciences from the University of Bradford, Ali moved to Aberdeen to specialise in human skeletal remains. Her work has shed new light on medieval Aberdeen, including significant discoveries at the city’s Franciscan, Carmelite, and Dominican friaries, offering valuable insight into their architecture, burial practices, and community life.

For 24 years, she served in the Aberdeen City Council Archaeology Unit, before founding Cameron Archaeology Ltd in 2010. Through the company, she has led extensive fieldwork and research across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and Angus, producing a substantial body of archaeological reports that continue to inform regional understanding of the past.

A passionate advocate for community archaeology, she established Mesolithic Deeside, a volunteer - driven project exploring prehistoric life along the River Dee. Her commitment to public engagement has inspired generations of community archaeologists - school pupils, students, and local enthusiasts - many of whom gained essential field skills under her guidance. Ali has also been a much-valued advocate of the University’s Department of Archaeology, working on collaborative research projects and as a regular guest lecturer, generously sharing her expertise with our students.

Laura Main - Actress

Degree: DLitt

Laura Main is an Aberdeen‑born actress and musical theatre performer, recognised as one of the city’s most successful contemporary creative talents.

Her love of acting began aged thirteen, playing the role of Annie in a Phoenix Theatre production. Educated at Hazlehead Academy and trained at Danscentre, she spent her spare time in various theatre groups in the city, including Aberdeen Youth Music Theatre. She later studied History of Art at the University of Aberdeen, further strengthening her passion performing in student groups Treading the Boards and the Student Shows.

After graduating in 1998, Laura trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London and soon established a varied stage and screen career. Her first professional work was with the Royal Shakespeare Company and she went on to be cast as regular roles in television series ITV’s Murder City, Channel 4’s The Mill and most notably as an original cast member in the acclaimed BBC One drama, Call the Midwife, in which she has starred for 15 series.

In 2015, Laura won the BBC Children in Need Strictly Come Dancing Special, and continues to perform on stage, including a UK tour as Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical. She recently sung on BBC Scotland’s Burns Night 2025 and BBC’s VJ Day 80 at the National Memorial Arboretum.

She continues to have strong links with the city and is a patron of both The Archie Foundation and Aberdeen Arts Centre.

Professor Serhii Plokhii - Historian and author

Degree: DLitt

Professor Serhii Plokhii is an historian and author who currently holds the Mykhailo S. Hrushevs'kyi Professorship of Ukrainian History and served as Director of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard from 2013 to 2025.

He is widely recognised as one of the most significant and influential scholars of Ukraine, as well as one of the world’s leading historians of nuclear power and nuclear safety.

In 1980, he graduated with an undergraduate degree in history and social sciences from Dnipropetrovsk University (now known as Oles Honchar Dnipro National University), where he later became a Professor. Before joining Harvard, he undertook teaching and research at the University of Alberta, serving as Associate Director of the Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Research and founding a research programme at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies.

Professor Plokhii’s work has received numerous international honours, including the Lionel Gelber Prize, the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non‑Fiction, and the Pushkin House Book Prize - awarded for both The Last Empire and Chernobyl: History of a Tragedy. He has also been recognised with the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, the Antonovych Foundation Award, and the Ambassador of New Europe Prize. In 2024, he received the prestigious Arenberg Prize for History for The Russo‑Ukrainian War.

Lucy Smith BEM - Fundraiser and MND Campaigner

Degree: MUniv

Lucy Smith BEM is one of Scotland’s most powerful advocates for people living with motor neurone disease (MND). Diagnosed at just 19, Lucy has transformed a life‑limiting diagnosis into a decade‑long campaign of awareness‑raising, fundraising and policy influence. Her work has helped mobilise public, political and scientific attention around MND, earning her a British Empire Medal for voluntary services to MND research.

Through public storytelling, national media appearances and grassroots fundraising, Lucy has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to support MND research and specialist care in Scotland and the UK, predominantly through MND Scotland. This funding has directly supported research environments such as the University of Aberdeen, which is internationally recognised for its pioneering work in MND diagnostics and treatment discovery. Aberdeen researchers have led globally significant breakthroughs, including early diagnostic tools and novel therapeutic targets, positioning the University as a key contributor to the global fight against MND.

Lucy has also engaged with the research and clinical community in the north-east of Scotland, helping to bridge lived experience with academic and medical expertise. Together, Lucy and the University of Aberdeen exemplify how human experience and world‑class research can combine to drive progress, hope and lasting impact in MND.

Bob Keiler CBE - Entrepreneur and regional champion

Degree: MUniv

Bob Keiller CBE is a highly regarded Scottish businessman whose career has been closely intertwined with the economic growth and transformation of the north‑east of Scotland. Best known for his leadership in the energy services sector, Bob played a pivotal role in strengthening Aberdeen’s position as a global energy hub. He was chief executive of Wood Group from 2012 to 2015, leading the Aberdeen‑headquartered company through a period of significant international growth following its £1 billion acquisition of Production Services Network (PSN), a business Bob himself had created through a management buy‑out from Halliburton in 2006. Under his leadership, PSN grew rapidly from Aberdeen into a major global operator in offshore and onshore field services.

Beyond corporate leadership, Bob is deeply embedded in Aberdeen’s civic, economic, and energy ecosystem and has engaged with the University around leadership, entrepreneurship, and regional regeneration. He has made a lasting contribution to the wider north‑east economy in numerous ways. As chair of Scottish Enterprise from 2016 to 2018, he championed entrepreneurship, innovation and regional growth, with a strong focus on supporting diversification in energy‑dependent regions. He has also served as president and chair of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, and is chair of Our Union Street, leading efforts to regenerate Aberdeen city centre and re‑energise its flagship thoroughfare.

Awarded a CBE in 2017 for services to business and entrepreneurship, Bob continues to work with and mentor businesses in the north‑east, remaining a prominent advocate for the region’s future prosperity.

Aminatta Forna OBE PhD - Writer

Degree: DLitt

Dr Aminatta Forna OBE is an internationally acclaimed writer whose work sits at the intersection of history, memory and the imagination, shaped in part by her Scottish heritage. Born in 1964 in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, to a Scottish mother and a Sierra Leonean father, Forna’s early life spanned Scotland, Sierra Leone and later the wider world, experiences that deeply inform her writing.

A Harkness Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, she holds a PhD from Bath Spa University. Her father, Dr Mohamed Sorie Forna, studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen in the late 1950s on a scholarship. Aminatta first gained wide recognition with her memoir The Devil That Danced on the Water (2002), a powerful exploration of her father’s life and execution, which established her as a major literary voice. This was followed by a series of highly praised novels, including Ancestor Stones (2006), The Memory of Love (2010), The Hired Man (2013) and Happiness (2018). Her essay collection The Window Seat (2021) includes her most sustained writing on Scotland. Her fiction is noted for its emotional depth and its sensitive examination of war, trauma and resilience.

Her literary success has been marked by major honours. The Memory of Love won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book in 2011, and she received the Windham–Campbell Literature Prize in 2014. Her work has also been shortlisted for some of the world’s most prestigious literary awards, including the Baillie Gifford Prize, the Women’s Prize, the IMPAC Prize and the Neustadt Prize. Her books have been translated into twenty-two languages, reaching a global readership. A fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and appointed OBE in 2017, Aminatta remains a prominent figure in contemporary literature, proudly rooted in her Scottish beginnings while writing for the world.

Professor George Gray Youngson CBE, MBChB, PhD, FRCPEdin (Hon), FRCSEd, FRACS (Hon) - Paediatric Surgeon

Degree: MD

Professor George Youngson was born in Glasgow and educated in Fife before pursuing a medical career. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen Medical School in 1973 and completed postgraduate surgical training in Aberdeen and Inverness, as well as internationally in London, Ontario, and at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.

He was appointed Consultant General Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 1984 and became Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital in 1988. Over more than two decades, he made a major contribution to specialist surgical care for children in the north of Scotland, retiring from clinical practice in 2010.

In recognition of his achievements in paediatric surgery, teaching, and research, the University of Aberdeen awarded him a personal Chair in Paediatric Surgery in 1999 and appointed him Emeritus Professor in 2010. His professional leadership extended nationally and internationally, including service as Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Chair of the UK Intercollegiate Specialty Examination Board in Paediatric Surgery.

Professor Youngson was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2009 for services to child health in Scotland and continues to support children’s surgery through charitable and advisory roles. Currently, he serves on the board of the Scottish charity, Kids Operating Room, KidsOR, as a trustee and is Patron of the local children’s charity, the Archie Foundation – of which he was also part of the original working group which founded the charity.

Charles Bain BEM - Company Director, Fundraiser & Dementia Research Advocate

Degree: MUniv

Charles Bain, an Aberdeen‑based businessman, has been an outstanding fundraiser and ambassador for the University for more than a decade. His support is driven by a deeply personal commitment to advancing Alzheimer's and dementia research, following diagnoses affecting both his father and his wife Carol’s father.

Through his philanthropic leadership, Charles has enabled the purchase of four vital pieces of research equipment, now located within the John Mallard PET Centre, significantly enhancing the University’s capacity for cutting‑edge research in North-East Scotland. These efforts have also directly funded a PhD scholarship and helped facilitate a second, ensuring that emerging researchers are supported to pursue innovative work in this critical field.

Charles has distinguished himself through imaginative, high‑profile fundraising events that have attracted both local and wider community interest. His creativity, drive, and commitment have helped raise substantial funds, increase public awareness, and strengthen Alzheimer’s and dementia research within our School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition.

Throughout this journey, he has worked closely with his wife Carol, whose dedication and partnership have been integral to the success of their efforts. Together, they have inspired widespread support for Alzheimer's and dementia research, uniting individuals, organisations, and businesses in the north-east behind this vital cause. Charles is a Burgess of Guild of the City and Royal Burgh of Aberdeen and holds the Taisho rank within the Order of the Scottish Samurai. In 2019, he was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to charity in the city.

Juergen Meier CBE - Engineer, industrialist and green power advocate

Degree: DEng

Jürgen Maier CBE FRS FREng is a highly respected engineer‑industrialist whose career has been defined by applying engineering excellence to large‑scale industrial and energy transformation. Trained in production engineering, Jürgen began his career as a graduate engineer at Siemens in 1986, developing a deep, hands‑on understanding of manufacturing systems, automation and industrial operations.

Over more than three decades at Siemens, Jürgen rose through senior technical and operational roles before serving as Chief Executive of Siemens UK from 2014 to 2019. During this period, he positioned engineering innovation at the core of national infrastructure projects, championing digital manufacturing, rail electrification and low‑carbon power systems. A pivotal moment in his engineering legacy was leading the government‑commissioned Made Smarter Review, which outlined how advanced digital technologies could transform UK manufacturing productivity while supporting decarbonisation.

In recent years, Jürgen’s engineering credentials have been closely aligned with clean power. Appointed Chair of Great British Energy in 2024, he has become a leading advocate for renewable energy, grid modernisation and the engineering skills needed to deliver the UK’s clean power transition. In this role, Jürgen has worked directly with the University of Aberdeen on energy‑transition activity, including participating in and supporting industry–academia roundtables hosted by the University, bringing together regional renewable-energy stakeholders and University leadership. These engagements align with the University of Aberdeen’s strengths in energy systems, offshore engineering, net‑zero research and transition economics, and reflect Maier’s wider clean‑power agenda as chair of a national public energy body.

Jenna Louise Ross OBE BSc (Hons), MBA, PhD, NSch, CMgr CCMI, FRAgS - Environmental and Agricultural Scientist

Degree: DUniv

Dr Jenna Louise Ross holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Aberdeen, an MBA and First Class Honours Degree from Robert Gordon University, a Diploma in Management and Leadership from the Chartered Management Institute and Executive Education in Global Business from Harvard Business School.

In 2018, she completed a prestigious Nuffield Farming Scholarship where she spent 26-weeks travelling the world studying global opportunities in agriculture with a specific focus on slug control.

She has received awards from Lantra, CARAS, Helping it Happen, Aberdeen Business School, Chartered Management Institute, Royal Northern Agricultural Society, Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust (HSBC Salver & Greener Future Award), Aberdeen Convention Bureau (Impact and Ambassador awards), Top Outstanding Young Person Award, Women in Agriculture Innovator of the Year, Coronation Champion and was selected as one of the top 5 MBA graduates in the world by Association of MBA’s. Furthermore, Dr Ross was named the University of Aberdeen’s Alum of the Year in 2025.

Dr Ross currently works for the UK Government funded UK Agri-Tech Centre (formally Crop Health and Protection), leading game changing high impact global projects and programmes.

Outside of her academic career, Dr Ross is passionate about inspiring the next generation through her voluntary roles as a STEM ambassador and Lantra industry champion. Jenna is also a Chartered Companion of the Chartered Management Institute, Trustee and Vice Chair of The Farmers Club Charitable Trust, Trustee of Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust and Fellow and board member of CARAS. She is also past Director of the Oxford Farming Conference and past Chair of the Nuffield Farming Aberdeen Conference and Nuffield Scotland.

Appointed OBE in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Honours, she is a strong advocate for STEM education and industry leadership.

John Charles Otto (Co-founder and Advocate)

Degree: MUniv

John Otto is a businessman who co-founded the JJR Macleod Memorial Statue Society with Kimberlie Hamilton to raise funding for a permanent memorial in Aberdeen to honour the Scottish co-discoverer of insulin, John James Rickard Macleod. A graduate of the University, and later Regius Professor of Physiology at his alma mater, Macleod was awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology, although his significant role in the discovery of insulin was for many years not widely recognised.

John, who has lived over 50 years with Type 1 diabetes, has worked tirelessly to ensure that the discovery is more clearly associated with Macleod, Scotland and the University of Aberdeen. In 2023, a bronze and granite memorial was unveiled in Aberdeen’s Duthie Park and now serves as an enduring reminder of Macleod’s lifesaving legacy.

John continues to build upon his relationships with medical and historical communities in Toronto, Canada, where insulin was discovered in 1922, by raising awareness of Macleod at special events and fostering international links that benefit Aberdeen and the University’s cutting-edge diabetes-related research.

Anne Minto OBE, LLB, FRSA, FCGI, FCIPD, FCIM (Businesswoman, Company Director and Philanthropist)

Degree: LLD

Anne Minto is an international businesswoman and philanthropist who has used her leadership roles to champion workplace diversity, equal pay and female board room representation. A lawyer by profession, Anne holds an LLB from the University of Aberdeen and has had a long and distinguished career in business in Shell, Smiths Group plc and latterly as Group Human Resources Director at Centrica plc.

Since 2010 Anne has had a successful portfolio career as a Non-Executive Director serving on the Boards of Shire plc, Tate and Lyle plc and EXL Inc. She is a former Chair of the Institute of Employment Studies and the Engineering Development Trust and served on the National Employers Committee for the Reserve Forces. Currently she is the Chair of the International Women Forum UK and a member of the Leadership Council for Women in Prison.

Anne was an Independent Governor of the University Court for 9 years and chaired the Finance and Resources Committee. She also served as the Chair of the University Development Trust for 9 years until September 2021. She has been a generous donor and supporter of the University over many years and funds four annual scholarships for students studying law.

Anne was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the engineering industry. She is also an ambassador and sponsor of the Om Foundation School in Delhi.

Angus Pelham Burn Esq, JP, DL, LLD, CStJ, MBE (Businessman, Company Director and Philanthropist)

Degree: MUniv

Angus Pelham Burn is a retired businessman, company director and philanthropist with a long and distinguished record of public service in Scotland. After an early career with the Hudson's Bay Company in Northern Canada for a period of over seven years, Angus returned to Scotland and went into farming. Angus later went on to have a successful business career in a variety of senior company and board roles, including as Chair of Aberdeen Asset Management, Scottish Provident and the Aberdeen Airport Consultative Committee. His other directorships have included the Bank of Scotland and Dana Petroleum.

Angus also served on Grampian Regional Council as the Councillor for Banchory in Aberdeenshire for 27 years and is a former Justice of Peace and Member of The Queen's Body Guard for Scotland, The Royal Company of Archers. He also served as the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire for over 20 years. Angus was the first Chair of Global Philanthropic and is a Patron of the World Monuments Fund, which supports important and vulnerable heritage sites across the world as well as the Knockando Woolmill Trust, a Scottish charity which preserves a working woollen mill in Moray.

Angus has made a meaningful contribution to the work of the University, including donations to our library, Cruikshank Botanical Gardens and the Angus Pelham Burn Award. These scholarships have supported PhD students studying anthropology in carrying out important field work, with a particular focus on research in Greenland and the Arctic region. In 2019, Angus was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the community in the north-east of Scotland.

Roy Dennis OBE (Field ornithologist, Ecologist and Author)

Degree: DSc

Roy Dennis is a leading field ornithologist and wildlife consultant, who has dedicated his professional life to the conservation of rare birds and the reintroduction of lost species in Scotland and in other countries. Roy’s early career included a period running the Fair Isle Bird Observatory in the Shetland Islands, leaving in 1970 to work as the RSPB’s senior officer in Northern Scotland where he remained for 20 years until 1990. Roy later returned to support the work of the Fair Isle Bird Observatory Trust as Chair for 16 years until 2010 and is now Honorary President. The Highland Foundation for Wildlife, which was founded by Roy in 1995, was renamed as the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation in 2017 to reflect the increasingly international scope of their work as well as Roy’s contribution to conservation. He continues to work on projects as Honorary Director.

As an independent wildlife specialist, Roy has authored or contributed to numerous books, articles and TV documentaries and is a specialist in raptor conservation and bird and mammal reintroductions, having carried out Osprey, Red Kite, Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Beaver and Red Squirrel reintroduction projects. In 2004, Roy was voted the RSPB Golden Eagle Award winner for the person who had done most for nature conservation in Scotland in the last 100 years. In 1992 Roy was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to nature conservation in Scotland. Almost 30 years later, he received further recognition when he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2023 for services to wildlife.

Fiona Drouet MBE (Charity Founder and CEO, Campaigner)

Degree: DHC

Fiona Drouet is a nationally recognised campaigner and charity leader, who has dedicated her life to transforming how educational institutions respond to gender-based violence (GBV).

Following the tragic loss of her 18-year-old daughter Emily in 2016 - a law student at the University who took her own life after a sustained campaign of abuse by a fellow student - Fiona founded EmilyTest. EmilyTest is a pioneering Scottish charity that works to improve safety and support for students affected by GBV across colleges and universities. Under her leadership, EmilyTest developed the GBV Charter for Colleges and Universities, the first of its kind globally, now adopted by institutions across Scotland. The University of Aberdeen was awarded the EmilyTest Charter in 2024 for its own outstanding commitment to gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, intervention, and support.

Fiona continues to work closely with the Scottish Government, Police Scotland, trade unions and education leaders to embed systemic change and raise awareness of abuse, coercion, and mental health impacts in academic settings. Her advocacy efforts have earned her widespread recognition, including honorary doctorates from the University of Strathclyde and the Open University in Scotland. Fiona was also made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours for her services to education and gender-based violence prevention.

Her Excellency Ambassador Rena Lee (International Lawyer and Diplomat)

Degree: LLD

Ambassador Rena Lee is a distinguished international lawyer, diplomat, and public servant with over three decades of experience in global legal affairs.

Rena is Singapore’s Ambassador for International Law. As Ambassador for Oceans and Law of the Sea Issues and Special Envoy of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, she was elected President of the United Nations Intergovernmental Conference for an agreement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea on marine biodiversity (BBNJ Agreement). She successfully guided complex negotiations involving 193 nations toward this landmark international agreement which will enter into force in January 2026.

Her expertise spans a wide range of public international law, including environmental and climate change law, humanitarian and human rights law, and law of the sea. She has represented Singapore in various international forums and is a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

A graduate of the National University of Singapore, Rena was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2024 in recognition of her diplomatic achievements and global impact.

Jim Glennie (One of Scotland's last surviving D-Day veterans)

Degree: MUniv

Jim Glennie, who turned 100 in 2025, was presented with a Master of the University (MUniv) at a special ceremony on 14 October 2025 at King’s College Chapel.

Born in Turriff, Mr Glennie was just 18 years old when he became one of the first Gordon Highlanders to land on Normandy’s beaches in 1944. After being called up, he enlisted in the army and began his military service at the Bridge of Don Barracks in Aberdeen, before being sent to the front line to take part in Operation Overlord, the largest seaborne invasion in history.
