Academic Induction

Your first class will be your School induction, which will run during Welcome Week. Your School induction will run over several days during Welcome Week. This will help you prepare for the year ahead and provide you with useful advice on your course, as well as School contacts and information on getting the most out of your academic experience.

Your School of Law Induction Programme will not be on your timetable, so please make sure to check the date and time detailed below and add this to your calendar. This information can also be found on MyAberdeen.

Level 1 Students

New Level 1 students should attend all three scheduled Induction sessions plus their library tour. 

MA Legal Studies and MA Criminology students should attend their specific Induction session and library tour. They are also welcome to attend the other Level 1 Induction sessions if they would like to. However, the School of Law is aware that these students will also be connected to other Schools, with invitations to also attend those specific Inductions.

Reading Lists

Recommended reading for courses will be available on each course site which can be found on MyAberdeen at the start of session.

In the meantime, you can brush up your study skills and learn more about the University on our award-winning Toolkit website.

Assessment

Courses will be assessed by combination of methods including timed online multiple-choice tests, assigned essays and on online or on campus exams.

The exact timetable and structure for each course are not yet finalised but the School is currently planning the details of content and assessment for all courses and these details will be shared on each course on the MyAberdeen platform.

Skills, mentoring and networking

The learning experience at the School of Law focuses on developing key skills throughout your degree. From advocacy to critical legal argument, each course will enable you to build and develop core skills. The School will also provide opportunities for you to engage with the legal profession through our Law Careers Fair, as well as through our Law mentoring programme.

The School continues to support various student-led initiatives. These include mock courts run by the Mooting Society, the pro bono law clinic, Casus Omissus, as well as a variety of learning and networking experiences offered by the many different student societies eg AU Law Society, Aberdeen Student Parliament, the Law Reform Society and Lawyers Without Borders.

Assessment

There will be no DPLP on campus examinations. Assessment will take the form of written, oral, and advocacy assessments. Assessments will vary from course to course, and specific details will be provided.

Reading Lists

Reading lists for individual courses will be available through MyAberdeen later in the summer.

Skills, mentoring and networking

The School will also provide opportunities for you to engage with the legal profession through our virtual Law Careers Fair, as well as through our Law specific mentoring programme. External visits and presentations from the profession are a core part of the programme and will be held either on campus or online. There will also be an opportunity for some DPLP students to participate in the Faculty of Advocates Mini-Devilling Programme.

The School will also provide opportunities for you to engage with the legal profession through events such as our virtual Law Careers Fair, and Research Seminar Series.

Students who have chosen our Professional Skills programmes as the capstone course for their degree will also spend 3 weeks in the summer completing an intensive module honing their skills in their chosen specialisation.

These 3-week programmes allow students to take part in simulations, group work and presentations while learning from highly-regarded experts in their field.

Orientation

We are looking forward to welcoming you to campus to start your research journey with us. As a Postgraduate Research student you will have the opportunity to attend a University wide induction in addition to your school induction.

The University of Aberdeen Orientation programme has been designed to take you through all of the essential information you will need for your student life. You can get started now by working through the interactive modules.

There are a series of modules that you can work through before you arrive. Once you have registered you can access the remaining modules and complete your mandatory training programme through your bespoke PGR training platform on our virtual learning environment.

There will be a school welcome event for Postgraduate Research students. This will provide an opportunity to meet Postgraduate coordinators and PhD supervisors. There will also be time to answer any questions you may have. Further details regarding the welcome event will follow in due course.

Skills, mentoring and networking

We will be offering training programmes for all first, second and third-year PhD students.
