There are a number of ways in which the University can communicate with you throughout your studies, these can be accessed by every student.

Social Media for Students of the University

Build your social network and find your community!

The University of Aberdeen has a presence across all major social media channels for current students. We use these channels to keep you up to date with all things related and of interest to current students, make sure you follow these channels - there may even be a competition or two!

Student Facebook Groups

New Students can join out new student group which is jointly run by the Students' Union and the University. It's a forum for all things UoA!

Students who are residents in University accommodation can join the accommodation group where you can meet and chat with flatmates prior to arriving and throughout their stay.

Facebook Groups are a great way of interacting with your peers with similar interests or academic route.

Careers and Employability Service Social Media

Follow the Careers and Employability Service channels to hear about events, competitions and opportunities including exclusive internships and skills development opportunities.

ABVentures

ABVentures is the University of Aberdeen's dedicated advice and support service for starting a business or social enterprise, available to students, alumni and staff.

Other Important University Communication

From time to time, the University's Communication department may need to contact students to keep them informed about news and events on campus outside the schedule of the fortnightly e-newsletter.

These communications will be sent directly to your student email account.

Your Student Experience Organisation (MyAberdeen)

Within MyAberdeen, you will find the Student Experience organisation. You will find a whole array of information, updates, news, events and promotions here.

Ensure you check this regularly for any opportunities that have been announced.

Student Hub (formally Student Portal)

The Student Hub is the place to visit if you want to find out:

  • Exam results
  • Timetables
  • Your academic progress
  • Academic information, for example how many credits you have, your degree title etc.
  • Non-academic information
Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

'MyAberdeen' is your very own virtual learning environment.

This is where you will find learning materials and resources associated with your courses and where you will be notified of any announcements about your courses or the University.

Communications from the Careers and Employability Service

Communication from the Careers and Employability Service

All student and graduates have access to MyCareerHub , a platform used by the Careers and Employability Service which allows you to connect with part-time work, internships, graduate jobs and book careers events and appointments.

It is important that students keep their MyCareerHub profile up-to-date so that you can receive personalised communications, general news and information and register for additional job alerts.

The Careers and Employability Service will send the following emails to you from MyCareerHub:

  • Career Readiness updates: Current students will be sent targeted information based what you have said you would like to take part in over the next 12 months and what areas of support you require. You told us this information as part of the online registration process at enrolment and you can update it at re-enrolment each year. We will send these updates weekly but it will depend on your answers as to how often you receive one. Make sure you have ticked the box for personalised communications to receive these.
  • Job and event alerts: When you search for a job on MyCareerHub, you can opt in to receiving targeted job alerts for that search. You can unsubscribe from these alerts at any time but will be automatically unsubscribed if you do not engage with them for over 30 days.
  • Appointment and event information: You will be sent automated confirmation, reminder and update emails based on your engagement with the platform, e.g. confirmation of booking an appointment or an updated location of an event.

These communications will be sent directly to your student email account. Emails will be sent from careers@abdn.ac.uk so please add this address to your safe senders.

Confidentiality

The University of Aberdeen is committed to protecting your personal information and being clear about the information we collect and how we use it. We take our responsibilities seriously as the controller of your personal information under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and Data Protection Act 2018. Information on how the University manages student personal data is available at our Current Students privacy notice .

What is Confidential Information?

Confidential information refers to private information or anything that is not intended to be freely shared. There may be certain circumstances where the University or members of staff such as your personal tutor, lecturers or support services needs to disclose confidential information that the student has shared to support their wellbeing or academic journey.

If I share confidential information will it be shared with anyone else?

This will very much depend on the circumstances but we will look to obtain the consent of the student where possible and explain why there is a need to disclose the information and who will have access to this information - this may be to other staff in the school, Student Support, external organisations or family. Information will only ever be disclosed on a “need to know” basis with the welfare of the student at the centre.

Who has access to my personal information?

Students at the University are entitled to make their own decisions about who has access to their information and no personal information is divulged even to parents, unless there is a serious concern about their welfare. If a student is content for information to be shared with their parents or guardian, it is good practice to have this documented and written consent provided. This will then be recorded on the Student Records System.

Sharing without your consent

There may be certain circumstances where the University feels it is necessary to share your information without your consent with internal support, external emergency services or next of kin. These may include

  1. 1. The student is considered likely to be a danger to themselves or others.
  2. 2. The student has a medical emergency.
  3. 3. The student is subject to a procedure resulting in their suspension, expulsion or removal from the University.
  4. 4. Disclosure is required by law and/or is in the public interest.
  5. 5. The University is made aware of an under 18 student or a vulnerable adult who is being abused or is at risk of abuse
