Postgraduate research students

You will be able to begin this process 40 days before your study start date.

To become a fully registered student, there are a number of steps you need to complete.

1. Activate your IT account

To begin registering as a student, you must activate your IT account, email and password. It is important that you get into the habit of regularly checking your University account email once it is set up.

During setting up your IT account, you will be required to set up a password which will be used to log in to University software and accounts, including WiFi. You will then be prompted to set up Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication to secure your account.

Using Microsoft Outlook

It is strongly recommended that students set up Microsoft Outlook on their mobile devices so they can easily access their University email.

2. Begin online registration

This step asks you to confirm all the information needed to complete your registration. You will do this in the Student Hub. You will be asked to confirm your personal, financial and academic details. As part of this process, you will need to upload a photo for your student ID card.

Payment for tuition fees should be made during this step. A minimum payment of 50% of the self funded tuition fee should be paid at registration with the balance being paid 30 days from date of invoice.

If you are an international student, you will also be required to complete a Right to Study Check when you arrive in Aberdeen.

Getting started module

Once you have registered, you can begin to work through the 'Getting started at the University of Aberdeen' module. It is designed to introduce you to the PGR journey, the University systems you will use throughout your programme and the support services available to you. An updated version of this course will be available soon.

Distance learning students

If you are a distance learning PGR student, please contact the Postgraduate Research College once you have completed the registration process and ask them to activate your record.

International students

Complete your Right to Study Check

All international postgraduate research students will be required to complete a Right to Study Check. You will receive emails to your student email account from the University about this. These emails will tell you when you need to complete the Right to Study check, where to complete it and what to bring to your check.

If you think you will not be able to commence studies the latest start date noted on your CAS (confirmation of acceptance for studies), you should inform the Research admissions team so you can be advised on the next steps.
