In order to access University IT facilities, staff must have a personal IT account with an associated username (User ID) and password.

Password security

If you think your University password might have been compromised - for example, if you’ve been the victim of a phishing attack, or if you think someone may have watched you type it:

Remember that you should never tell anyone what your password is, no matter how innocent it may seem to do so, nor write your password down where others may find it. The IT Service Desk will never ask you to reveal your password.

Self-service Password Reset (SSPR) – personal IT accounts

If you forget your IT account password, or if you need to change it because your IT account has been compromised, you can reset it using Self-Service Password Reset – SSPR.

Before using SSPR for the first time, you will need to register by verifying your identity and setting up your authentication method/s – just as you would for online banking. If you don’t register for SSPR in advance you will not be able to use the service to reset your password.

To register for SSPR

  • Register for SSPR here
  • Sign in with your University username@abdn.ac.uk and current IT account password
    • If you are a new start, use the temporary IT account password issued to you by email
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your authentication methods – you’ll be asked to provide a mobile phone number and/or alternative email address

To reset your password using SSPR

See our user guide for full instructions.

Note: Once you have changed your password, you will need to update wireless and email settings on your mobile devices with the new password in order to receive email and connect to the University wireless network. Please allow up to 30 minutes for your password change to synchronise across all University IT systems.

Change your password – additional IT accounts

For additional IT accounts - such as Project (P), External (XTS), Guest (GST), Resource (XRS), and Student Society – please use our Change Password utility web form.
