Training and Support

We provide a range of training and support services available to all staff across Schools and Directorates, whether actively involved in running projects right now, or likely to be at some point in the future. Training and support is also available to those involved in activities which may not be considered projects, but which would be benefit from the application of project management tools and techniques.

Training

We provide formal training to Project Boards on all strategic projects within the University's wider project portfolio. We also offer tailored training and support to anyone involved in the management or delivery of projects on an ad hoc basis. We offer presentation-based and interactive training in person or online.

The sessions on offer include the following:

  • PMO: General Overview and Introductory Session
  • Project Management Fundamentals
  • Project Management at the University - Using our Methodology
  • Project Management Tools and Techniques - 'How To'
  • Lunch and Learn Sessions which can be spread over a period of weeks or tailored depending on desired outcomes.

In addition, tailored sessions are also available on request. These might include:

We also deliver a “Project Management in a Day” course in partnership with Staff Development at the University. This is designed to cover the fundamentals of project management. This course compliments the formal ILM Qualification in Project Management offered via Staff Development within the Directorate of People.

Guidance and Advice

For guidance or advice on running your project, you can also contact the Project Management Office . We will provide general advice and answers to any project-related queries, guidance on the University's Project Management Methodology and also professional standards such as PRINCE2 or the Association of Project Management Body of Knowledge. We also provide more specific guidance on the application of project management techniques.

Self-Help and Online Resources

If you prefer self-help, we have a range of online resources available, designed to be accessible to project management practitioners and lay-persons alike.

This includes the University's Project Management Methodology, associated templates for key documents, including a Business Case, Project Initiation Documentation and Project Schedules, process and procedures documents, and also “How to Guides” which provide simple and easy-to-understand guidance on using different project management tools and techniques.

Document Preparation and Review

We can assist with the development of project related documentation such as those just referred to, providing advice and guidance on the information required. We can also peer review completed project documents before they are submitted to the relevant body for approval. Please contact the PMO for more information.

Governance

We assist all strategic projects in establishing robust governance arrangements as they go through the initial start-up and initiation phase. This includes providing guidance on establishing Project Boards, the Board remit and composition, Board reporting lines, appointing Board members and guidance on roles and responsibilities.
