It is with great sadness that we share the news that former University manager Kathy Fowler passed away at the weekend after a long and difficult illness.

Formerly College Registrar at what was once the College of Physical Sciences, Kathy will have been known to many in our community as she made an enormous contribution to many parts of the institution throughout her 28 years at the University. These areas include the Computing Centre, Faculty of Social Sciences & Law, Centre for Continuing Education and the College of Physical Sciences.

Kathy’s final post at the University was as Business Development & Operations Manager in the Aberdeen Institute for Energy before retiring in July 2018.

Hulda Sveinsdottir, who worked closely with Kathy in the College of Physical Sciences where Kathy spent many years at College Registrar leading the school’s administration team, paid tribute:

"Kathy made a huge contribution to the University's reputation, particularly as a centre of excellence in oil, gas and energy. During her time as College Registrar in the College of Physical Sciences, and later as Deputy Executive Director of the Aberdeen Institute for Energy, she worked tirelessly to support the development of energy-related programmes, facilitate research, build relationships with the oil and gas industry, and promote the University nationally and internationally.

“She played a leading role in the development of the Northern Research Partnership in Engineering in 2006 and the establishment of the National Subsea Research Institute (NSRI) in 2009, where she later served as a Board member.

“Kathy was passionate about professional development and change management and was a member of the Association of University Administrators (AUA) for over 20 years. She was awarded the Fellowship of the AUA in 2010.

"Kathy was the manager we all dream of. She was a great mentor to her staff, and led our activities with the utmost professionalism, energy and lots of good humour. Her raucous laughter was never far off.”

Our thoughts and condolences go out to her husband Professor Paul Fowler, daughter Claire, son-in-law Steven, grandson Coire and their wider family members and friends.

The funeral will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday June 26 at Baldarroch Crematorium. All welcome. No flowers please, donations to Multiple System Atrophy Trust. The reception will be for family only.
