Dear colleagues,
I wanted to share the fantastic news announced last week that our researchers are leading a £5.7m cross-UK project which will take a unique ‘whole systems’ approach to delivering a just energy transition.
This ambitious and large-scale project shows off the best that we can offer and really demonstrates that when we embrace these big sectoral challenges we are recognised as having the skills to both lead and deliver.
Led by Professor Tavis Potts, co-coordinator of the University’s Just Transition Lab and Dean for Environmental Sustainability, the five-year UKRI project will see us work with Stirling, Strathclyde, Edinburgh, Warwick and Reading Universities, with support from the UK Committee on Climate Change, the UK Government and devolved Scottish and Welsh Government, various local authorities and other regional and civil society partners.
A truly interdisciplinary project, JUST-Systems will see early career researchers across Social Sciences, Engineering, Law, Geosciences and the Humanities work to find systems solutions that address several complex carbon and societal challenges.
You can read the press release in full here, along with news of several other research funding awards announced last week which we are also celebrating.
The University of Aberdeen has a long and proud history of delivering innovative solutions that address current and future energy challenges. This project, which puts people and communities at the centre of one of the biggest challenges facing society today, is an excellent example of the tangible impact our research can have.
I hope you join me in congratulating Tavis and the team on this fantastic achievement.
Best wishes
Nick
