New era as new Principal joins University of Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen enters a new era today (1 August) with Professor George Boyne taking over as Principal and Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Boyne joins the University of Aberdeen from Cardiff University, where he was Pro Vice-Chancellor, and also Head of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, with responsibility for all student recruitment.

Originally from Aberdeen and also a double graduate of the University of Aberdeen, Professor Boyne said of his new appointment:

“It is a tremendous privilege to ‘come home’ to lead one of the UK’s oldest seats of learning. This is an exciting time to study and work at the University of Aberdeen which is an ambitious institution consistently ranked among the world’s top universities. I look forward to driving forward its profile, growth and progression on academic excellence and internationalisation.”

Married with two sons, Professor Boyne succeeds Professor Sir Ian Diamond, who has retired after eight years in the post.
