You will be aware of industrial action that has been taking place at the University, which is related to our transformation programme 'Adapting for Continued Success'.
We thought it would be helpful to share some more information as to why the University needs to make changes that will ultimately deliver an enhanced education and student experience.
Background
The Scottish higher education sector is facing real challenges due to a decline in government funding while also experiencing rising costs.
Universities like ours have also become reliant on international student fees, but changes to UK immigration rules have reduced the number of such students coming to the UK.
Across the country universities are taking steps to improve their finances and become more sustainable.
What we are doing
Adapting for Continued Success is looking at a range of measures to make our University more resilient.
One proposal involves moving to a new academic structure based on four faculties and this is progressing through our governance procedures. This will not impact you.
We have also stopped recruitment onto PGT programmes that have consistently seen fewer than six students.
Low student numbers can make a course expensive to run, limit the learning experience and suggests the programme no longer matches what students or employers need. This is also going through our governance procedures. Current students should not be impacted.
What does this mean for me?
Your learning experience is our main priority - please be assured that our transformation proposals should have no bearing on your studies with us.
I hope this is helpful but if you have any queries please speak to your School. I will keep you informed.
Best wishes,
Jo-Anne Murray
Vice-Principal (Education)
