Monday 23rd February begins Eating Disorders Awareness Week. This year’s theme highlights the power of community, and the vital role family, friends, and other support networks play in helping someone feel supported, understood, and never alone on their journey (BEAT, 2026).

At least 1.25 million people in the UK are living with an eating disorder, and many more are affected as loved ones, friends, or carers. Eating disorders can be deeply isolating, but connecting with others who understand, or who share your interests and values, can be life-changing. And it doesn’t matter whether your community is one person or many, even a single meaningful connection can bring hope, strength, and the reminder that no one has to face this alone.

If you or someone you care about is affected by an eating disorder, support is available. You can contact the BEAT helpline on 0808 801 0432, free to call from all phones 3pm– 8pm, Monday to Friday. You can also access a range of helpful guides and resources on their website whenever you need them.

In addition Student Advice and Support and the University Counselling Service are here for you providing a safe place and a listening to talk on campus for anyone who is living with an eating disorder or is worried about someone they care about.
