Research programmes have been funded by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC), Nuffield, Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Scottish Home and Health Department, DTI and by a range of industrial and commercial sponsors.

The Department is also home to The Africa-Asia Centre for Sustainability research centre.
