This doctoral training session is open to postgraduates undertaking a PhD at any Scottish university.

It explores through discussion, rather than instruction, the practical and methodological issues attendant to writing historical biography. Historical biographers Colin Nicolson and Michael Penman will draw on a selection of exemplary biographies of the famous and obscure, and of places and ideas, as well as participants’ recommendations. Biographies on display cover a range of historical periods (from medieval to modern) and areas (Scottish, British, European, and American).

Participants are requested to undertake some short preparatory reading and consider methodological problems of undertaking historical biography and prosopography in their own research projects. Readings will be available to download in advance. Over a buffet lunch, session leaders will provide advice in response to participants’ queries about their own projects.
