Machine learning for optimal operation of water resources systems: a feasibility study

The management of water resource systems is a complex problem where an increasing number of interests must be balanced in a sustainable manner to meet short and long-term objectives. This project aims to study the feasibility of using a machine learning approach to provide optimal decision making and planning to appropriately manage water allocation.

Key areas for exploration are problem settings, data availability and usability, as well as the identification and pilot development of state-of-the-art machine learning methodologies that enable optimal water allocation. The use of modern AI techniques is currently under-examined in this particular setting, and as such our research will lead to the identification of novel viewpoints from the perspective of Geosciences and AI.
