When people hear the term “international student”, they often imagine someone living abroad in a new country. My experience looks a little different. I am an international student living in Vietnam, preparing to begin my master’s degree online in Digital Pedagogy and Educational Futures. Although I am not based in the UK, this early stage of my journey has already encouraged me to reflect on learning, connection and what it means to be part of a global university.
Getting ready to begin From Vietnam
I officially start the programme on 26 January and at the moment, I am in the preparation stage. I am becoming familiar with the online learning platform, course structure and expectations. Because of the time difference, I am not planning to attend live online classes at the beginning. Instead, I am preparing to learn mainly through recorded sessions, which allows me to study at a steady and manageable pace.
During quiet mornings in Vietnam, I often sit with a cup of coffee and explore the course materials, read guidance from lecturers and organise my study schedule. This preparation time has helped me feel more confident and ready for the journey ahead.
Feeling connected before classes begin
Even before the programme has fully started, I already feel a sense of connection. Reading course announcements, university updates and student communications reminds me that I am part of a wider academic community. Knowing that I will soon be studying alongside students from different countries makes the experience feel exciting and meaningful.
Although my learning will take place online, I do not see it as studying alone. I see it as joining a shared learning space where ideas, experiences, and perspectives come together, regardless of location.
Balancing Work, Life, and Study
As an online English teacher, preparing to return to student life requires careful planning. I am thinking ahead about how to balance work commitments, study time and personal wellbeing. This stage has already taught me the importance of time management and setting realistic expectations for myself.
Preparing in advance has given me the space to reflect on my goals and remind myself why I chose this programme: to grow as an educator and to better understand the future of digital learning.
Looking Forward With Purpose
Although my studies are only just beginning, this experience has already shaped how I view education. Studying Digital Pedagogy and Educational Futures online represents flexibility, accessibility and possibility. I am looking forward to learning how education can be designed in more inclusive and meaningful ways, especially in digital environments.
My life as an international student may not follow the traditional path, but it is one that feels purposeful and well suited to who I am today. I am excited to officially begin this journey and see how it will influence both my professional practice and personal growth.
