Clinical Professor, School of Medicine, Medical Science & Nutrition
My journey into science began in the clinic, where caring for patients sparked a desire to understand the complex mechanisms underlying disease.
During my early clinical training, I became fascinated by the power of molecular microbiology to uncover how microbes drive health and disease, and to inform new therapeutic strategies. The most surprising part of my science journey has been realizing how fluid career paths can be when curiosity is followed.
Mentors who actively championed women from ethnic minority backgrounds at a time when very few did were pivotal in giving me confidence and opportunity.
Women bring empathy, resilience, and diverse perspectives to medical sciences research. “Her voice in science” matters because inclusive science is better science.
My advice to girls: follow what fascinates you, seek mentors who support you (ignore those who don't), and never doubt that you belong.
