My interest in science began early, I loved studying science during school, and although I never considered a career in research, I enjoyed working as part of a team with a vision to improve health.
As my journey into STEM unfolded, I realise I needed to constantly read and learn and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy working as part of a trans-disciplinary team, allowing our research to have greater scope, reach and impact.
The support from my family has incredibly valuable, helping me balance the demands of travel, out of hours to share my science. I enjoy knowledge exchange and impact activities, but as a working Mum and scientist, I do recognise that time away from home is limited.
Women bring a unique perspective to science; we are excellent at multitasking and that is why ‘’her voice’’ is so important. Every voice is important, but women’s perspectives drives innovation, improve research outcomes, and inspires future generations.
For girls beginning to explore STEM pathways my advice would be to embrace curiosity and recognise that diverse perspectives are positive in science.
