Finding cosy places to study, relax, or take a break is something every student appreciates. During my time exploring Aberdeen, I discovered a few spots – both on campus and in the city – that quickly became favorites. Here is a look at some of the cafes that bring comfort, community and creativity into student life.
On-campus cafés: comfortable, convenient and student-friendly
Union Brew: Student Union Building
If you’re in the mood for a more social environment, Union Brew is a great option. It’s relaxed and friendly, offering plenty of seats where you can study, chat or meet other students. The atmosphere is lively and full of energy and now and then you might hear students playing the piano, which gives the space a warm and spontaneous feel. It’s one of the best places on campus to feel connected to the wider student community.
Hardback Café: Sir Duncan Rice Library
Right at the entrance of the library, this café is perfect for long study days. You can grab a drink, recharge for a moment and head straight back to studying. It’s calm, convenient and ideal for anyone who likes having a coffee next to their textbooks.
A creative hideaway in the city centre
Art Café:
My first visit to Art Café felt like walking into a warm, inviting living room tucked away in the heart of Aberdeen. The café is run by Soran, who is incredibly friendly, welcoming and always ready to make you feel at home. His hospitality sets the tone for the entire space.
The café is cozy and full of character, decorated with artworks created by local artists. Many of these pieces are available for purchase, turning the café into a mini art gallery where creativity fills every corner. The menu is another reason to visit. Their homemade-style food has a comforting, fresh taste - simple, warm and full of flavor. Whether you’re looking for something sweet or savory, the items feel like they’ve been prepared with genuine care.
What makes Art Café even more special is its strong sense of community. They regularly host creative and social events, bringing people together in the friendliest atmosphere. You can always find their upcoming events on their Facebook group, where they post updates, workshops and gatherings open to everyone.
