"Born at six months and weighing less than a kilogram is not an advisable combination: implications are inevitable and complications common. It took four subsequent years to be diagnosed with cerebral palsy from birth. I am incredibly lucky to be at the mild spectrum of my disability, with balance and walking most affected. Over the years I have appreciated the need to pace myself; staying mobile, while able to sit down when necessary to rest tight muscles. I am exceedingly fortunate with the complementary nature of my job.”
Mark Paterson, Curator, Cruickshank Botanic Garden
“I was diagnosed with an immune deficiency disorder as a child which has caused chronic pain as an adult. The pandemic frightened me in a way that my condition never has before. Along with the physical concerns, my mental health took a hit as anxiety flared up. For a long time, I struggled with this alone, but after opening up to my manager, provisions were put in place to support me. Although I still struggle with my mental health, being able to talk openly, feeling seen and being supported at work has felt like a weight off my shoulders.”
Bex, Engagement & Inclusion Officer
