Research Strategy

Research Vision:

Our vision is to be a School delivering internationally leading, impactful research, across our main strengths (Archaeology, Geography and Environment, Geology and Geophysics, Planetary Sciences, and Energy Transition) within an environment which is inclusive, supportive and respectful, allowing individuals to excel.

We will adhere to the highest ethical standards, cognisant of the work we do within both the human and natural environments and sustainability will be addressed in all of our research activity. We will follow the FAIR principles for data management and stewardship and we will publish following open research best practice. We will champion interdisciplinarity, innovation and enterprise as we push the boundaries of our research. We will be agile, and ready to engage with new and emerging research areas and agendas, while drawing on our disciplinary strengths. We will engage with business, industry, policy makers and stakeholders to maximise the impact of our research and build a resilient funding base.

Strategy for Delivery:

Our strategy is built on 5 key pillars.

  1. World leading research: Research funding is the foundation of increasing the quality of our research (in all formats). Staff will be encouraged to think bigger and realistically.
  2. Impact, innovation and engagement: We will encourage staff to think Impact, Innovation, and Engagement across all research activity.
  3. Research Culture: We will continue to foster an open and inclusive environment led by our strong School identity which is underpinned by our collective collegiate practice.
  4. Integrity: We are mindful of ethical considerations related to our research, following best-practice and complying with all relevant requirements, while remaining cognisant that this applies across the breadth of our research.
  5. Resilient and Agile: The School secures funding from a broad base and will share best practice within the School to improve funding knowledge more widely.
