Clackmannanshire Case Study

Clackmannanshire

Map of Clackmannanshire deprivation indexClackmannanshire is the smallest local authority on mainland Scotland and is home to some of the most disadvantaged communities in Scotland.

This case will engage with the local authority and communities on decarbonised heat and energy for a healthier, wealthier and greener future, exploring disadvantaged communities’ energy challenges, increasing participation and supporting Net Zero planning and engagement.

Case Study introduction and background

Menstrie and the power of water signClackmannanshire is the smallest local authority on mainland Scotland, characterised by a semi-rural landscape and a population of approximately 52,000.

The region has a deep-rooted industrial heritage in coal mining, glassworks, and brewing, but the decline of these sectors in the 20th century, culminating in the 2016 closure of the Longannet Power Station, has led to a range of social and economic challenges.

Key issues and systematic interventions proposed

Alva Glen waterfallToday, the area faces high levels of economic inactivity, demographic decline and a range of social deprivations including energy and food poverty. The scope of this case study is to examine how community energy initiatives can serve as transformative mechanisms to address these challenges while advancing the transition to net zero.

In line with the broader projects systems focus, this case study explores the intersecting systems of energy, food, water and climate. We are interested in how the Clack’s transition, particularly community owned renewables, can be wielded not just to transform the energy system but respond to wider issues within the area, increasingly the capabilities, capacities and resilience of local communities.

Current progress

Wimpy park signAt present we are working with a range of partners including Clackmannanshire Council and FEL Scotland, community centres and community gardens.

Each faces a range of needs, challenges, and opportunities which renewable energy may help overcome and fulfil.
