Mechanical Workshop

The Mechanical Workshop has a variety of manual and CNC lathes and mills, as well as the expertise to operate them. They can design, build, and repair complex equipment for research or teaching.

The Electronics Workshop has the tools and expertise to design, repair, and build nearly any electrical device. From high-power to radio-frequency printed circuits, or embedded devices.

The workshops are represented at showcase events, making the wider University and potential external partners aware of their services.

The School of Engineering has two workshops, both based in the Fraser Noble Building:

  • MECHANICAL (FN 023).
  • ELECTRONICS (FN 029).

Workshops have nine full-time staff members (seven Technicians and two Senior Technicians). Teaching and research of all levels is supported across Engineering. The workshops also carry out jobs for the wider University when required, and have worked with many departments.

The workshops have had tremendous investment, so they have the machinery, equipment and resources to support the University at the highest possible level. The major pieces of machinery/equipment the workshops currently have (but not limited to) are:

Mechanical workshop:

  • Haas VF-4 CNC milling machine.
  • Haas CNC Mini Mill.
  • Haas TL-1 CNC lathe.
  • Meyer ST2066 manual lathe.
  • Cyclematic CTL-618e manual lathe.
  • Bambu Lab X1E Combo filament 3D printer.
  • Formlabs Form 3+ resin 3D printer.

The mechanical workshop offers precision milling and turning of many materials, filament and resin 3D printing of different plastic types, TIG & MIG welding, extensive wood working machinery, shot blasting, and precision surface grinding. The workshop also has some staff members trained on Swagelok Small Bore Tubing.

Electronics workshop:

  • Makera Carvera CNC Machine (PCB manufacture and other materials).
  • LPKF Protoflow S4 (reflow soldering oven).

The electronics workshop offers services such as soldering, installation of sensors and strain gauges, data acquisition and logging, PCB and schematic consultation, and design and electrical works such as PAT testing and power installation.

Important notes

Please note that if you have design files that will need manufactured, the workshops use SolidWorks. So please send any designs to us as SolidWorks parts/drawing files, this lessens of the chance of there being any compatibility issues. If you are unsure that machine manufacture is required, please contact and you will be advised if SolidWorks files are necessary to complete your work.

For Engineering staff/students only: SolidWorks is available to have installed on your device, to request this please submit an IT Service Desk request. SolidWorks is also on Engineering classroom computers and the VDI.

If you would like to submit a workshop job request, please email a job sheet to either electronics.workshop@abdn.ac.uk or mechanical.workshop@abdn.ac.uk and you will be provided with a quote to have the work completed, or if more information is required a meeting can be organised. The Aberdeen 2040 Climate capsule was designed and manufactured by our workshop.

Pendulum Rig

Pendulum Rig

Mechanical & Electronics collaborated to produce this highly precise Double Pendulum Rig for Dynamics research. The rig is oscillated on a shaker table to emulate a ‘wave’ effect similar to the ocean.

3D printed chemically-resistant Flow Cell produced on our resin printer, for Chemical Engineering research.

 MRI Scanner Replica

MRI Scanner Replica

Mechanical workshop machined a PVC structure on our CNC mill which replicates the exact interior of an MRI scanner, for Medical Sciences research. Made in-house faster and cheaper than an external supplier.
