Centre for Energy Transition hosts Taiwanese delegation

The University's Centre for Energy Transition hosted a visit from a Ministerial delegation representing the National Science & Technology Council (NSTC) of Taiwan last week, who were in Scotland on a fact-finding mission that aims to help Taiwan reach its target of net zero emissions by 2050.

Organised by Scottish Enterprise, the high-level delegation met with key members of staff including Professor John Underhill, Director of the University’s Centre for Energy Transition, Senior Vice-Principal Professor Karl Leydecker, Dean of Enterprise and Innovation Professor Heather Morgan, and Professor Tavis Potts from the University’s Just Transition Lab.

The delegation heard about the University’s research and training commitment to address the challenges of balancing security, affordability and environmental sustainability as part of the energy transition. Discussion focused on areas such as hydrogen and carbon capture and storage, the challenges of ensuring a just energy transition as well as potential areas for cooperation.

Professor Underhill commented: “Given Taiwan’s current dependence on imports dominated by oil, gas and coal, the challenge to decarbonise is massive and an important one. It was excellent to hear of the efforts being made to explore the ways and means for Taiwan to meet net zero targets as it sets out on its journey to decarbonise its energy sources. The visit bodes well for further co-operation and partnership between the NSTC and the University.”
