University of Aberdeen scientist features in list of outstanding Scottish talent

Dr Beatriz Goulao, Advanced Research Fellow in the Health Services Research Unit, has been named in the inaugural Saltire Society's '40 under 40' list created to celebrate and honour outstanding Scottish talent.

Dr Goulao who has been at the University for nearly nine years works on improving clinical trials to ensure they are as useful as possible to patients and healthcare professionals. Dr Goulao has a specific interest in improving the relevance and understanding of data and statistics and has employed creative methods to achieve that. In addition to this award, Dr Goulao has recently been awarded a research grant by the Medical Research Council to continue developing her research in this field.

Dr Goulao is listed alongside contemporaries covering music, theatre, poetry and applied sciences from across Scotland.

The Saltire Society’s members nominated each winner with an expert panel deciding the outcome. The organisation which has been championing Scottish culture since 1936 founded the awards to ‘raise awareness of the contributions being made by leading creative Scots in the early-mid stages of their careers.’

Dr Goulao said: “It is a wonderful surprise to have been selected for this list. I am delighted that my work has been recognised along such talented artists and scientists working in Scotland. One of my biggest passions is to make data and statistics more accessible to all. I plan to continue working with Scottish creatives, patients and healthcare professionals, and researchers to develop solutions together.”

Sarah Mason, Executive Director of The Saltire Society, said “We had an extraordinary number of talented young people nominated from every corner of Scotland, including Shetland, Orkney and Tiree, through Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and into the borders and Dumfries & Galloway across all five categories.  It goes to show the incredible range of creative talent living and working in Scotland today.  We are thrilled to reveal our ‘40 Under 40’ and celebrate the very best of the best.”
