Each year the University presents a number of awards to members of staff in recognition of their outstanding contribution to enhance the academic lives of students and colleagues. You can find the award categories below and submit your nominations. From this year, the University will extend the awards to our professional staff by introducing Professional services awards.

For the first time, all awards will be presented to the winners in a shared ceremony hosted by the Principal.

Principal's Prizes for Research and Engagement

The Principal's Prizes for Research, Impact and Engagement are intended to recognise outstanding contributions in research, impact and engagement.

 

Award Categories

 

  • Outstanding Research
    Prizes will be awarded for innovative research or significant breakthrough or a major contribution to your field.  Self-nominations or nominations from Supervisors, Directors of Research and Heads of School are welcomed in the following sub categories:
    • Individual Postgraduate Researcher / Early Career Researcher
    • Individuals at further stages of career development
    • Team Award (two or more researchers working together)

A reference from an external source describing the importance of the research to the field should be included with the nomination.

  • Public Engagement with Research
    Prizes will be awarded to researchers to recognise outstanding achievement in research-led public engagement*. Staff or postgraduate students can nominate themselves or others for the following three categories:
    • Early Career Researcher
    • Main prize – for individuals at further stages of career development
    • Outstanding achievement in Biomedical Sciences

Winners will receive a personal award in addition to a development award to be spent within the University.

 

* By research-led public engagement, we mean interaction with communities outside academia that has been inspired or is driven by research activity.

  • Development Trust Award for Philanthropy/Alumni Engagement
    The University of Aberdeen Development Trust and Alumni Engagement team are delighted to recognise the contributions of staff and students through philanthropy, alumni engagement or fundraising activities with this Award. We have received tremendous support in a variety of ways over the past year and this Award will recognise any of the following activities that support the University’s strategic aims:
    • engagement with our alumni
    • supporting visits and events
    • proactively fundraising
    • raising awareness
    • acting as advocates

The benefits of fundraising and alumni relations impact the whole University community and this Award is intended to recognise the people that enable this across the institution. Self-nominations or nominations from the Development Trust and Alumni Engagement team are welcomed.

  • Success in Engagement with Industry
    This prize is open to all staff and postgraduate research students and will recognise successful engagement with industry through impact on an industry partner’s processes, products or services.  Self-nominations are welcome in addition to nominations from industry partners or industry bodies, or from Heads of School.  Note that one or more letters of support from the industry partner(s) or other stakeholders is required.

Judging the Awards

Judging panels will be convened for each award with representation from external experts, senior members of University staff and other stakeholders.

 

Winners will receive a personal award and will be announced at the Principals Excellence Awards Dinner on 13th June 2019.

Principal's Awards for Excellence in Professional and Support Services

The Principal’s Awards for Excellence in Professional and Support services have been introduced to recognise the exceptional and significant contributions individuals or teams have made towards fulfilling the objectives, values and beliefs of the University thus making a real difference to the broader life of students, staff or the University in general. 

Award Categories

Nominations are welcome from Line Managers, colleagues, students or representatives from external organisations in the following categories:

  • Excellence in Customer Service
    A member of staff who has consistently delivered an outstanding level of customer service
  • Excellence in Leadership
    A manager who has demonstrated outstanding leadership
  • Excellence in Partnership Working
    A member (or group) of staff who has worked consistently and effectively with partners
  • Excellence in Equality & Diversity
    A member (or group) of staff who has championed and advanced equality and diversity
  • Excellence in Sustainability
    A member (or group) of staff who has made an outstanding contribution to enhancing the local community or the environment
  • Excellence in Creativity & Innovation
    A member (or group) of staff who has created or implemented a new and innovative approach within their area of responsibility which has supported the achievement of strategic ambitions
  • Rising Star
    A member of staff who has made a significant impact on the performance of their team

Nominations will be open until 5th April 2019.

Judging the Awards

The judging panel will be made up of university staff, students and external representatives to review all applications.

Winners will receive a personal award and will be announced at the Principal's Excellence Awards Dinner on 13th June 2019.

AUSA and the University of Aberdeen Excellence in Teaching Award

AUSA and University of Aberdeen award for Excellence in Teaching is open to all students to nominate lecturers and teaching support staff. If you’ve enjoyed a stand out student experience from an individual member of teaching or support staff in any of the categories below, then please make sure to complete a nomination form so they get the recognition they deserve.

  • Most Accessible Lecturer (Champion for students with Disabilities)

  • Most Inspiring -  Has any member of staff inspired you in a memorable way?

Principal’s Teaching Excellence Award and Good Practice in Teaching Case Studies

Nominations are now closeed for this category.

The University of Aberdeen seeks to encourage and support staff to enhance their teaching through sharing examples of effective and innovative practice. Staff are invited to submit examples which have been evaluated to establish their impact on the student learning experience through an online submission process. A Panel led by the Vice-Principal Education will award three case studies £500 each, and a fourth example will be selected to receive the first Principal’s Teaching Excellence Award, receiving a larger prize of £1,000. 

To be considered for this year’s Award, submissions must be received by 1st March 2019.

Winners will be announced at the Annual Academic Development Symposium on 25th April 2019 and will be invited to collect their awards in person at the Principal’s Excellence Awards Dinner on June 13th 2019.
