What I've learned from the Finance Sector Insights event
2020-12-16

We’ve been in touch with some of our Careers Service Ambassadors to ask them what they’ve learned from attending the online sessions we ran throughout October as part of our Aberdeen Employability Boost Award. We hope that their insight will encourage you to check out some of our exclusive resources and get involved in the Boost Award when it returns in February 2021!

Denisa got in touch to tell us about the Finance Sector Insights event that she attended on the 16th October. She says

'During the event we got a chance to hear about three different career paths from University of Aberdeen alumni currently working in the Finance Sector. All of the speakers discussed what inspired them to choose their career and why they enjoy working with their current companies. They all agreed on few important tips which I found very insightful. I would like to share these tips with you:

  1. Make sure you are studying the right degree - do not be afraid to change your degree programme.
  2. Join a society or a sport club; these extra activities will help you build skills, develop your employability and grow your network of contacts.
  3. Try to apply for some internships, especially during your second and third year of studies to gain important work experience. If you are not really sure about which career path to take after graduation, again do not worry. You could apply for a range of opportunities.
  4. When applying for a job position, your application should be individual and match the company’s values.'

Although Denisa heard from alumni working in the Finance Sector, this advice is relevant to students studying any degree subject. If you are unsure of what you want to do after you leave University why not book an appointment with a Careers Adviser to talk through your options. We can also advise you on the best way to go about sourcing work experience.

Did you know about number 4? Tailoring your application is the best way to ensure it stands out from the crowd. Don’t forget you can have your applications checked by a member of the Careers team via our Virtual Adviser Service.
