Surviving the Scottish Winter

Surviving the Scottish Winter
2019-02-19

Hi! My name is Amy and I am a Go Abroad Ambassador here at the University of Aberdeen. I am in 4th year, studying Business Management and Hispanic Studies. Last year, I spent my year abroad in Madrid, Spain working as an English Language Assistant in a high school. It was a fantastic experience!

Welcome to the official middle of the Scottish winter! A confusing time with a mix of sun, snow and everything in between. During one day you can see a rainstorm and bright sunshine!

One of my favourite things about Scotland is definitely the beauty that wintertime brings. The Scottish highlands are breath-taking at any time of the year, but they have an even more special kind of charm when their hills are covered in snow and the sun is shining. Also, King’s College in the sun with snow on the grass makes for a spectacular Instagram post!

Living in Aberdeen, we are lucky to be close to some great places to ski or snowboard in the winter. For example, Glenshee in the Cairngorms National Park is only an hour and a half away from the university. There are other ski centres further away but still in the north of Scotland that are also really popular and the best way to get the centres is by car.

The most well known ones are pinpointed on the map below and the majority of the ski centres are based around the Cairngorms. Generally, the ski resorts that people visit the most are Glencoe, Glenshee, Nevis Range, The Lecht and and Cairngorm.

There is also a great dry slope in Aberdeen you can go to which is in Garthdee. You can travel there by bus.

My advice to you is to be prepared! The weather can change very quickly so always wear a warm coat with a hood when you leave your house. Winter in Scotland normally drags on till March so enjoy the next couple months of Scottish beauty… and ice skating to your classes!
