Arriving via Air

Aberdeen's international airport is served by a number of major airlines, providing an extensive network of travel throughout the UK, Europe and Worldwide destinations.

Watch this video which will provide information on making your way to your accommodation.

There is a frequent bus link to the city centre, and taxis from the airport to the University cost around £20-£25.

There is a taxi rank outside the Airport, but you can also pre-book a taxi from some of the following companies:

If you're travelling to Hillhead Student Village by bus, you should take the 727 bus into Aberdeen City Centre and then the number 20 bus to Hillhead. You can view the route below.

You can pay via cash (no change given), contactless, and by using local bus apps. You'll need both the Stagecoach App (for the 727 Bus) and First Bus App (for the 20 Bus).

Arriving via Bus or Train

First-class roads south to Edinburgh, Glasgow, and onwards, carry fast coach services linking Aberdeen with the UK's major cities. Competitive return fares, using Travelcard schemes, make coach travel popular with students. The earlier you book your travel, the cheaper the prices. Additionally, rail services connect Aberdeen both north and south. There are regular direct trains to London, and services from Edinburgh and Glasgow link with other mainline routes. Inverness, the scenic West Coast and Highlands are reached northwards.

Both Aberdeen Bus Station and Aberdeen Rail Station are located on either side of Union Square Shopping Centre. There is a taxi rank available within the Rail station side of Union Square, you can also pre-book a taxi from some of the companies below. A taxi from Union Square to Hillhead Student Village is normally approximately £15.

The number 20 bus travels to Hillhead from Guild Street (about a 5 minute walk from the bus and rail station). You can view the route below.

You can pay via cash (no change given), contactless, as well as using the First Bus App

Important Border Control and Customs Information

Before travelling to the UK please familiarise yourself with information provided by the Scottish Government and UK Government. These differ depending on the country you are travelling from (including those you travel through in the 10 days before arriving in the UK).

UK Border Control have detailed guidance on how to prepare for the UK border. Please look at these before arrival to make your arrival into the UK as smooth as possible.

  • On your flight into the UK please ask for a ‘landing card’ from the flight crew, then fully fill in the relevant parts whilst on-board. Have it ready with your Passport before you land as you will need it to show the UK Border Force Officer (UKBF). You must have this completed before your passport can be stamped.
  • Take the passport out of any cover ready to be stamped.
  • Have your Certificate Acceptance of Studies (CAS Letter) ready to be checked.
  • At the UK Border you will be asked what University and what course you will be studying. You will also be asked how long the course will be, you will need all supporting documents in paper copy already printed out and to hand to be shown to the Officer.
  • You are arriving at peak University student intake time, passport and document checks can take a while. UKBF will process customers as efficiently as possible but please be prepared to wait.
