Academic Induction

Your first class will be your School induction, which is a week-long programme, running full days during Welcome Week. This will help you prepare for the year ahead and provide you with useful advice on your course, as well as School contacts and information on getting the most out of your academic experience.

Your School of Law Induction Programme will not be on your timetable, so please make sure to check the date and time and add this to your calendar. This information can also be found on MyAberdeen and linked in the Law Induction programme document.

Assessments

Most courses will be assessed by a combination of timed, online multiple-choice tests, assigned essays and timed online exams although, depending on your course selection, some courses may have an on-campus exam. The exact timetables and structure for each course are not yet finalised but the School is currently planning the details of content and assessment for all courses. This will be shared on each of the course’s MyAberdeen site and made available to students to view before registration.

Skills, Mentoring and Networking

The learning experience at the School of Law focuses on developing key skills throughout your degree, such as critical analysis and independent research skills.

The School will also provide opportunities for you to engage with the legal profession through events such as our virtual Law Careers Fair, and Research Seminar Series.

Students who have chosen our Professional Skills programmes as the capstone course for their degree will also spend 3 weeks in the summer completing an intensive module honing their skills in their chosen specialisation.

These 3-week programmes allow students to take part in simulations, group work and presentations while learning from highly-regarded experts in their field.

Postgraduate Research

As well as being a Postgraduate Research Student in the School of Law you are also part of a wider PGR community through the Postgraduate Research College

Orientation

We are looking forward to welcoming you to campus to start your research journey with us. As a Postgraduate Research student you will have the opportunity to attend a University wide induction in addition to your school induction.

The University of Aberdeen Orientation programme has been designed to take you through all of the essential information you will need for your student life. You can get started now by working through the interactive modules.

There are a series of modules that you can work through before you arrive. Once you have registered you can access the remaining modules and complete your mandatory training programme through your bespoke PGR training platform on our virtual learning environment.

There will be a school welcome event for Postgraduate Research students. This will provide an opportunity to meet Postgraduate coordinators and PhD supervisors. There will also be time to answer any questions you may have. Further details regarding the welcome event will follow in due course.
