Postgraduate researchers and early career academics are being invited to explore the wide-ranging opportunities available beyond university research at an upcoming online careers session.
“Research Careers in Industry for PGRs and ECRs” will shine a light on the often-overlooked pathways available to researchers outside academia. Designed for postdoctoral staff, early career researchers, and postgraduate researchers at any stage, the session aims to demystify how research skills translate into industry roles.
From innovation and technology development to data science, finance, and pharmaceuticals, the event will explore the breadth of careers available. Attendees will gain insight into how industry roles differ from academic positions, how recruitment works, and what drives organisations outside the university environment.
The session will feature a panel of experienced professionals who have navigated careers across both academia and industry.
Dr Sophie Dubber, now an Earth Observation Data Scientist at Earthwave, will share her journey from completing a PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Edinburgh to working with remote sensing data to tackle climate change challenges.
Joining her is Dr Debakshi Mullick, a Structural Biologist and Microscopist with extensive experience across academia and industry. Currently based at the University of Glasgow, she previously worked at GSK managing drug discovery projects and brings valuable insight into post-PhD career transitions.
Delivered online via Microsoft Teams, the session offers an accessible opportunity for researchers to gain practical advice, hear real-world experiences, and better understand how to position themselves for careers beyond academia.
