Former PhD Student flees Ukraine with artworks to curate Ukrainian Pavilion of Venice Biennale
On the first day of Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Maria Lanko managed to flee Ukraine. She drove for days to bring artworks out of Ukraine, with the intention of getting them to Venice, as she is part of the curatorial team curating the Ukrainian Pavilion this year. Despite the horrors of war that have taken place for the past several weeks, the curatorial team were determined to go ahead, because art still matters - perhaps we even need art more in times like these.
