The 2019 Complete University Guide highlighted the School's strength across the arts and humanities, with several disciplines at the top of the rankings in the UK and Scotland.
Reflecting the University of Aberdeen’s overall position in the top 30, the School was delighted to see its excellence recognised in a number of areas, with strong performances from English Literature, Film & Visual Culture, French, Linguistics and Music. Notable highlights are Linguistics, ranked 3rd in the UK and top in Scotland, and Film & Visual Culture, ranked 5th in the UK and 2nd in Scotland. English Literature is 3rd in Scotland and 18th in the UK, French 2nd in Scotland and 13th in the UK and Music 3rd in Scotland and 15th in the UK.
Welcoming the news of the School’s success, Professor Edward Welch, Head of School, commented that ‘this year’s rankings reflect the outstanding commitment of staff across the School, and the stimulating environment for learning and teaching they foster for our students. The smaller size of many of our disciplines mean students enjoy a friendly atmosphere and get to know all their teachers very well during the course of their degree’.
