Intensive Course in Applied Epidemiology to go online for 2021

Intensive Course in Applied Epidemiology to go online for 2021

After careful consideration we are pleased to announce that next year's ICAE will be running online next February and March next year with a new format.

Our well-established intensive course, now in its 28th year, will offer delegates the opportunity to gain a grounding in key principles in epidemiological study design and methodology from the safety of their own home or institution.

Beginning on 23rd February 2021 the course will run for five weeks, with two 90-minute sessions per week and capped with a final 2½ hour session on Saturday 27th March. The course will cover various aspects of epidemiological research, encompassing study design, collection & analysis of data and various methodological considerations including bias and confounding. Sessions will be delivered in a virtual face-to-face setting, allowing speakers to present to delegates, facilitate group activities and provide direct feedback to attendees.

Head of Group Professor Gary Macfarlane said, “For almost three decades we have been welcoming attendees from all over the world to our face to face one-week course providing an introduction to applied chronic disease epidemiology. We hope that moving the course in online in 2021, will give an opportunity for researchers and clinicians to join us, wherever they are in the world, for a combination of lectures, practical classes and discussions, to learn research skills which are more important today than ever”

Dr Gareth Jones, Reader of Epidemiology added, “Although COVID has brought many challenges, we’re delighted that it hasn’t derailed the annual Intensive Course in Applied Epidemiology. Moving the course online was a reaction to the current situation, but it offers exciting new opportunities for a refreshed and vibrant course.”
