The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the UK competition regulator. What does that mean? Well, we aim to tackle unfair behaviour by firms (such as high prices and bad quality) by promoting competitive markets. We have the power to do so through several methods such as market and anti-trust investigations, merger control, and consumer protection strategy, to name a few. For example, we have recently launched an investigation into Ticketmaster over the Oasis ticket sales (and no, not just because some of us are bitter that we couldn’t get tickets!) and investigated mergers such as Microsoft/Activision Blizzard and Adobe/Figma.

Overall, our ambition is to promote an environment where consumers can be confident that they are getting great choices and fair deals, competitive and fair-dealing businesses can innovate and thrive, and the whole UK economy can grow productively and sustainably.

At the CMA, we work in teams consisting of many professions, but we will be discussing the role of the Economist at this event. There are over 150 economists at the CMA, and over 25 based in Edinburgh. Our tasks vary and change daily; we analyse quantitative and qualitative information, talk to customers and businesses, present our findings to stakeholders and much more. What doesn’t change is that we work in teams to support and develop one another. Outside of casework, we can engage in further training, learning and development and initiatives to improve everyone’s experience of working here.

We frequently hire university graduates with a background in economics (at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels) as Assistant Economists and Economic Interns. We will be discussing what the role consists of, and how you can apply to work with us.”
